Spellfame Racing - Who We Are

Welcome to SpellfameRacing.co.uk, the home of Spellfame Racing. Below is an intro to who we are.

Who We Are

2008 was our first year in motorcycle racing. We decided to race in the Hottrax Motorsport Racing Club (HMRC) endurance racing series. I guess this was a natural move from track days. We wanted to have a decent days racing and didn't fancy short ten lappers.

How did it start? We met on a track day at Rockingham in 2007 and found that we were roughly the same age 50 vs 49, had the same bike GSXR 750, were within a second of each other on track and had the same sense of humour.

We did a few track days together and decided to step up to racing. I had ridden for 33 years on the road and always had a bike whereas Richard had only been riding for 4 years but had raced in rally cars for years and also in karts. In fact Richard runs a karting company 'Spellfame' at www.spellfame.co.uk.

We signed up for the ACU licences, took the classroom licences, joined HMRC and did every round and finished 8th in class despite one disqualification (ooh err) and one DNF when I slung it down the road at the Devil's Elbow at Mallory. So not bad, particularly when you think we were racing 750s when it was an unlimited class.

Richard did upgrade to a GSXR1000 and raced the last round with it. Although he could only manage to get the fastest lap between us by 0.02s. Clearly I do not make anything of this!

We are now racing the Hottrax Junior TAG 3 hour series in 2009 as we can only race on Saturdays.

One key point though is that we could not race without the support and assistance of the guys (and gal) that help us. So a big thank you to Paul, Andy, Nick, Emma, Colin and John. You can see who they are on the team page.

The Bikes

In 2008 we raced GSXR 750s apart from Silverstone where Richard upgraded to a GSXR1000 and will race it during 2009.

Andy's bike. GSXR750 K5. Ran pretty standard in 2008 with only a Brembo master cylinder and a Sigma slipper clutch with carbon fibre case protectors. Decided to get a bit more serious in 2009 and it is now fitted with a Power Commander, Akrapovic end can, and a BMC race air filter. Hitting 121bhp. Other add-ons are Gilles chain adjusters and paddock stand lifters and a remote brembo brake adjuster. Paint by Andy hence the variable quality.

UPDATE - Now running a ZX10R 2005. WP suspension, PC, quick action throttle and Micron pipe. Raced for the first time at Cadwell. Still learning how to ride a thou but am at least beating my GSXR750 times. No idea of power but keeps up with Richard's so I guess about 160bhp.

Richard's bike. Ran a GSXR750Y in 2008 with Ohlins all round, slipper clutch, PC and Yoshi pipe. Now in 2009 running a GSXR1000 K5. Micron pipe, Power Commander, BMC race filter, Sigma Slipper clutch. Develops 168bhp. Other items, rearsets
